What is bleed in printing?

Bleed is a printing term that refers to printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet before trimming. In other words, the bleed is the area to be trimmed off. The bleed is the part on the side of a document that gives the printer a small amount of space to account for movement of the paper, and design inconsistencies. Artwork and background colors can extend into the bleed area. After trimming, the bleed ensures that no unprinted edges occur in the final trimmed document. Bleed in printing is extremely important if you have graphics that print to the edge of the card/paper.

We recommend a 2-3 mm bleed area on all artwork supplied to us for printing.

What is the size of a business card?

Ecoprint business cards are printed at 90x55mm. If working in Adobe InDesign or Ilustrator, create a document size of 90×55, and when exporting to PDF, ensure to select 3mm bleed in the options. If you are working in Adobe Photoshop, please build your bleed into your design (tile size of 96x61mm) and export to PDF ensuring you include fonts while exporting. Remember when working in Photoshop that the actual print area will be 90×55, so leave sufficient gutter/space from the edge of your design.

We can also print business cards at different sizes, please ask us to see if we can accommodate your specific size request.

We’ll always let you know if something doesn’t look quite right with your designs.
